We have played over the years with a few bass players. However, they didn't really want to play that kind of stuff that we like. Or maybe they had glass ears. We didn't kick them out. They left by themselves. This does not mean that we don't want a bass player. Ivan Horder wrote this little story, which is very loosely based on a true story:If there ever was music, it was too obvious, soft and simple. It had to be abandoned, and so it was.
So three men left to the woods. Life became a circus. Many men laughed, many ladies pitied these poor rambling musicians.
After a ten years or so they came to a shore. And there was an old man in a white cloak standing beside a boat, white as well.
"Who are you, and what do you want?" Asked the old man.
"To the other side", was the answer.
"And your name is...?"
"Ivan Horder."
"Bullshit. Fake name." The old man turned to the second musician.
"Yours?"
"Samuli Kristian."
"No name at all, sir!" Then, the third musician.
"You?"
"Eh... I'm just a bass player."
Silence. The old man turned away, looked quite a while to the distance.
"What do you play?"
A little moment of annoyance. A reply.
"Jazz? I hate jazz." The old man tried not to laugh.
"And you want to the other side."
Silence.
"On one condition. The bass player stays here."
After a second or two a wide smile appeared in the bass player's face.
"I'm free!" He started to shout. "I'm free!"
And he run away, happier than ever in his life.
The old man in white turned to the two left.
"Do you dare to step on to this boat?"
"Yes."
So they did.
